Why GI and GL together
GI tells you how quickly a food's carbohydrate tends to raise blood glucose compared with pure glucose. GL adds portion size. Watermelon is a good example: high GI (76) but low GL per 100 g because it contains little carbohydrate (Atkinson 2008).

Quick answers
What is SugarHigh?
SugarHigh is a food awareness and tracking app for iPhone and Android. Snap a meal for estimated glycemic index (GI), glycemic load (GL) and keto status, with sugars, carbs, calories and macros. You can also log glucose and ketone readings you take yourself and view GKI over time.
How does the photo scan work?
Take a photo or pick one from your gallery. SugarHigh analyses the plate and returns estimated GI, GL, keto status and nutrition. Scan results are estimates: portions, sauces and lighting can change the result.
Where do the GI numbers come from?
Scan results are estimates. Food guides on this site cite published GI tables (usually Atkinson 2008) and USDA FoodData Central for carbs and fiber. SugarHigh never invents a GI value that is not in the source data for that food.
What is the difference between GI and GL?
GI ranks how quickly carbohydrate in a food tends to raise blood glucose versus pure glucose. GL multiplies GI by the carbohydrate in a portion, so it reflects how much you actually eat. See our GI vs GL guide for sourced examples.
What do the GI bands mean?
SugarHigh uses common bands: low 55 or less, medium 56 to 69, high 70 or more (Diabetes Canada). The in-app gauge shows where a food sits on that 0 to 100 scale.
What does the keto status badge mean?
It is a clear carb-based signal for keto friendly or not on the plate you scanned or looked up. It is not a prescription and does not diagnose or treat any condition.
Can I track glucose, ketones and GKI?
Yes. Log readings from your own meter and view GKI over time in History & Charts. SugarHigh does not measure glucose or ketones itself. The GKI calculator on this site outputs a number only and is not medical advice.
Is SugarHigh free?
SugarHigh includes a free trial, then requires a subscription to keep using the app. See the store listing for current prices in your region.
What platforms is SugarHigh on?
iPhone (iOS 15 or later) and Android via the App Store and Google Play. There is no offline mode; an internet connection is required to scan and analyse food.
Does SugarHigh work offline?
No. SugarHigh needs an internet connection to scan and analyse food; there is no offline mode.
Is SugarHigh a medical app?
No. It is a food awareness and tracking app and does not diagnose, treat or manage any condition. GI values vary by variety, ripeness, processing and cooking.
Are scan results as accurate as lab GI tests?
No. Scans are estimates for awareness. For sourced numbers, use the food guides on this site, which cite published tables and USDA data.
Does SugarHigh include barcode scanning?
No. SugarHigh estimates GI, GL and keto status from a meal photo, not from barcodes.
